June 9 – 23, 2008. Hip Hop inspired knitted dolls by French artist Ketty Sean

A selling exhibition of one-off hand knitted pieces created specifically for Couverture by Kitty Sean. Paris born Sean studied at the Sorbonne where she became very interested in graffiti and hip hop culture.

The exhibition at Couverture and the Garbstore was the culmination of five years of experimentation in wool resulting in her ‘family’ of creatures. “I use animals to depict specific human behaviour. Wool gives them a certain tenderness but underneath is hidden a glimpse of irony and small crispy details I catch from the street”. These creatures range from beret wearing birds, “The idea to make it came when I saw kids with their caps sitting on a bench, just wasting time, like little birds” to her more recent addition, “Smoothy,” a milkshake with frothy hair and “ Flavor Flav” an owl sporting huge glasses and a clock around his neck, “It’s my tribute to Public Enemy”.
