Former Paul Smith designer Emily Dyson established lifestyle store Couverture in 1999.

In Spring 2008 Couverture relocated from its original site in Chelsea to the heart of Notting Hill. Here Dyson, together with her fashion designer husband Ian Paley, opened the concept store "Couverture & The Garbstore". Launching to critical acclaim with The Times voting it Cult Shop in 2008, the store is now firmly established as one of London’s premier shopping destinations.

The ground and galleried first floors are dedicated to the Couverture collections and include womenswear and accessories, children’s and babywear, toys, jewellery, home accessories, furniture and covetable vintage finds.

The mix of International and European fashion labels result in languid dressing from Humanoid and Elsa Esturgie to innovative tailoring from Ann-Sofie Back and Rachel Comey. Cool modern styling for children can be found in collections by Album di Famiglia and Quincy whilst unique home accessories include cushions woven on hand looms from Maria La Rosa and one-off ceramic sculptures by cult French artist Nathalie Leté.

Dyson’s carefully sourced items are often only available in small quantities due to the intricate hand work involved and several designs are developed exclusively by Dyson for Couverture & The Garbstore, including soft lambswool throws and accessories for the home and a children’s knitwear collection.

The lower ground floor sees Ian Paley’s menswear brand, “Garbstore” come to life with a cutting edge collection of designer denims, retro t-shirts, utilitarian jackets and accessories.

The philosophy of the Garbstore label is richly ensconced in the history of clothing produced after the Second World War and draws influence from what can be coined ‘Unfamiliar Vintage’, familiar garments that reference the past but with a modern edge. For example jeans and trousers are tailored with fifties grip tape, all buttons are Tri-hole and sweats and tees follow vintage models. In essence pieces are re-imagined and made ‘historically new’.

Paley’s store also sells a selection of casual and urbanwear from cult labels such as Rittenhouse, Mountain Research, shirts and accessories by Engineered Garments and shoes by Terrem and Pointer, many of these labels exclusive to Couverture & The Garbstore in the UK. Garbstore collections are available online at www.garbstore.com

The culmination of Dyson & Paley’s unique style being showcased under one roof has guaranteed Couverture & The Garbstore’s status as a favourite haunt for both fashion and interiors stylists, as well as for the discerning customer.
